What is the Faculty of Excellence initiative?

Faculty Of Excellence is an initiative dedicated to bringing extraordinary, world-renowned professors with distinguished experience and remarkable ideas to Tecnológico de Monterrey.

These professors will contribute to the generation of knowledge and lead impactful projects that will inspire and enhance the experience of our students, our faculty, and the community at large.

Capitalizing on the extensive collaborative networks of Tecnologico de Monterrey and our bet on innovation in education, they will have the opportunity to leave their own personal mark and become agents of positive transformation in society and the world.

Overview

Dr. Cipriano Santos, an expert in mathematical optimization, has a strong record in technical and organizational leadership. He is a Visiting Scholar at San José State University (SJSU) in California. Previously, he was a lead scientist for optimization and machine learning at Gurobi Optimization and senior technical advisor for Recruitology’s machine learning team. Before retiring from Hewlett-Packard (HP) Laboratories, he served as a Distinguished Technologist.

His research blends mathematical optimization and machine learning. Over 27 years at HP, he contributed to applied research projects, creating optimization models and decision-support tools for supply chain management, customer relationship management, and data 
center resource allocation. He also developed workforce planning tools for industries like airlines and healthcare, including dispatcher workload distribution and operating room scheduling.

Cipriano Santos co-founded HP Labs Advanced Prototyping Organization in Guadalajara, Mexico. This program linked top STEM students from leading Mexican universities with HP Labs researchers to build prototypes solving high-impact business challenges.

Cipriano Santos joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished Professor in Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence for the School of Engineering and Sciences.

Dr. Toby Miller is a distinguished professor, author, and researcher specializing in cultural studies and media. Throughout his career, he has held academic appointments at renowned institutions. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Spain. Prior to this, he served as a Visiting Professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and as a Research Professor in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Riverside. He was also the Stuart Hall Professor of Cultural Studies at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Cuajimalpa (Mexico) and a Sir Walter Murdoch Distinguished Collaborator at Murdoch University.

He served as president of the Cultural Studies Association (United States) from 2019 to 2021. His research interests encompass media, social theory, cultural studies, technology, labor, gender, race, class, sports, citizenship, politics, the environment, and the Americas.

The author and editor of over 30 publications, Toby Miller’s work has been translated into 11 languages. His most recent books include Why Journalism? A Polemic (2024), Violence (2022), A COVID Charter, A Better World (2021), How Green Is Your Smartphone? (2020), Greenwashing Culture (2017), and Greenwashing Sport (2017), among others. He is currently the editor of Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture, and was formerly the editor of journals such as Open Cultural Studies, International Journal of E-Politics, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Journal of Sport and Social Issues, and Comunicación y Sociedad.
