Overview

Dr. Toby Miller is a distinguished professor, author, and researcher specializing in cultural studies and media. Throughout his career, he has held academic appointments at renowned institutions. He spent many years as a full professor at New York University (NYU) and as a Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside).

He served as president of the Cultural Studies Association (United States) from 2019 to 2021. His research interests encompass media, social theory, cultural studies, technology, labor, gender, race, class, sports, citizenship, politics, the environment, and the Americas.

He is currently working on two projects: one about violence, gender, and football; the other with systems of subvention for screen drama. Both focus on Mexico and the latter compares Mexico with Colombia, Chile, Spain, and the U.S. 

The author and editor of over 50 volumes, his work has been translated into 11 languages. His most recent books include Global Sports Go Green—Or Do They? (to be launched in 2026), Why Journalism? A Polemic (2024), and Violence (2021), to name a few. He is the editor of journals such as Society and was formerly the editor of Social Identities and the Journal of Sport and Social Issues, among others.

Toby Miller joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as a Distinguished Professor in Media and Cultural Studies for the School of Humanities and Education.
