Overview
Dr. Per-Olof Berggren is professor of Experimental Endocrinology and director of the Rolf Luft Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. He is the Mary Lou Held Visiting Professor at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), Miller School of Medicine, of the University of Miami in the United States. He also holds several other academic positions around the world, including in South Korea, Singapore, China, and Northern Ireland. He is member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine (U.S.), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Class VII, and served on the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet (1999-2022).
He has done pioneering work on the fundamental mechanisms regulating the stimulus-response coupling in the endocrine pancreas with seminal contributions in the areas of insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cell Ca2+ handling, phosphorylated inositol compounds, and insulin receptor-operated signaling. He established the anterior chamber of the eye as a transplantation site and the cornea as a natural body window for optical functional imaging at the interface between translational medicine and biotechnology, which represented a breakthrough and a state-of-the-art regenerative medicine approach for treating diabetes.
His publications have been featured in renowned journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Protocols, Nature Communications, Physiological Reviews, Science, Cell, Cell Metabolism, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Berggren joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished Visiting Professor in Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases for the Institute for Obesity Research and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
