We are in a society where you are either a success or a failure. At first, no one believes in you; you are just another person in the entrepreneur universe, and nobody believes in you. Yes, there were many times when I had doubts and asked myself why I was doing this, whether it was worth it, why didn’t I just carry on with my life at Microsoft and forget all about it.

I am Mónica Camacho, co-founder of La Cosita Chula, a company engaged in developing products that mix tradition with innovation.

While at university, I always enjoyed exploring. I studied informatics and when I found out about a Microsoft club there, I had to try. I started as a trainee at Microsoft, and went on to become a full-time employee. It was always an incredible experience. I decided to pursue an MBA en Innovation and Entrepreneurship at EGADE Business School, which allowed me to explore outside my own boundaries, travelling to China, knowing and taking in new things. I didn’t know that I would soon be making one of the most important decisions that would change the course of my life forever.

I resigned from Microsoft to become an entrepreneur.

This gave rise to La Cosita Chula, a company that seeks to professionalize the Mexican artisan industry. We believe in Mexican talent, in visibility to put Mexico’s name on high, and that artisan products are not the means but the end.

La Cosita Chula emerged from my business trips, where I was able to experience the international interest in Mexican culture, and when I talked about Mexico and the wonders we have, their eyes lit up.

I realized that we should question the status quo more often and get out of our comfort zones to achieve great things.

The La Cosita Chula initiative was selected as one of the most relevant social enterprises in Latin America by the Young Leadership of the Americas Initiative. With La Cosita Chula we had the opportunity to travel, learn and receive mentoring from international companies and universities, creating an unimaginable network. I had the opportunity to enjoy a 360 close-up in every sense: we have appeared on several platforms, such as newspapers, in various calls, such as BBVA Momentum, I met Barack Obama, we have been with Ford in diverse forums, we presented out pitch in front of sharks at the event Growth 2019 organized by the magazine Entrepreneur, and the list goes on.

There were undoubtedly many moments when I doubted myself, doubted the project. But it is important to remember, “Why am I doing it?” and establish yourself around the people who trust in you.

I am an Outlier because my story starts at Tec and ends up changing the world.

Estamos en una sociedad donde o eres exitoso o eres fracasado. Al principio nadie cree en ti, eres una más en el universo de los emprendedores y nadie apuesta por ti. Sí fueron muchos momentos en los cuales dudaba y me cuestionaba a mí misma por qué lo estaba haciendo, si valía la pena, que por qué no seguía simplemente con mi vida en Microsoft y me olvidaba de esto.

Soy Mónica Camacho, cofundadora de La Cosita Chula, empresa enfocada en desarrollar productos que mezclan la tradición con la innovación.

Durante la universidad siempre me gustó explorar, yo estudié Informática y al enterarme sobre un club de Microsoft allí solo debía intentarlo. Empecé como trainee en Microsoft, donde posteriormente me convierto en full-time employee, la experiencia siempre fue increíble. Decido realizar mi MBA en Innovation and Entrepreneurship en la EGADE Business School, algo que me permitió explorar fuera de mis propias barreras y viajar a China, conocer y respirar cosas nuevas. No sabía que en poco tiempo iba a tomar una de las decisiones más importantes y la que cambiaría el curso de mi vida para siempre.

Renuncié a Microsoft para emprender.

A partir de eso nace La Cosita Chula, una empresa que busca profesionalizar la industria artesanal mexicana. Creemos en el talento mexicano, en la visibilidad para llevar el nombre de México en alto, en que los productos artesanales no son el medio sino el fin.

La Cosita Chula nace a raíz de mis viajes profesionales, en donde yo pude experimentar el interés internacional por la cultura mexicana y que al hablar de México y de las maravillas que tenemos se les encendían los ojos.

Me di cuenta que debemos cuestionar el status quo más a menudo y salir de nuestra zona de confort para lograr grandes cosas.

La iniciativa de La Cosita Chula fue elegida como una de los emprendimientos sociales más relevantes de Latinoamérica por el programa Young Leadership of the Americas Initiative. Con La Cosita Chula tuvimos la oportunidad de viajar, conocer, recibir mentoring de empresas y universidades internacionales, se creó una red de networking inimaginable. Tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar de un close-up 360 en todo sentido: hemos aparecido en varias plataformas como periódicos, en varias convocatorias como BBVA Momentum, pude conocer a Barack Obama, hemos estado con Ford en distintos foros, pitcheamos frente a los tiburones en el evento Growth 2019 de la Revista Entrepreneur, y la lista sigue.

Definitivamente hubieron muchos momentos en los que dudé de mí misma, dudé del proyecto. Pero lo importante es recordar “¿por qué lo hago?” y solidificarte alrededor de las personas que confían en ti.

I think that everyone faces life’s challenges differently and something I have learned in my lifetime is my process of self-esteem, of understanding my story and the context of inequalities of the groups that historically have been discriminated against, based on my own experience

Hi, I am Maryangel García-Ramos, founder of the organization “Mexican Women with Disabilities” and head of the Diversity and Inclusion Office at Tec de Monterrey.

As a child, I was a dancer, immensely passionate about the arts and constantly active. One day, when I was 13, my back suddenly started hurting and overnight I was unable to walk. Medical tests detected an arteriovenous malformation around the spinal cord, which is only found in only 0.01% of the population aged 35 and over. Since then I have lived with a motor disability and have used a wheelchair for the past 21 years.

From an early age, I discovered I had a passion for everything related to design and art, so I studied Fashion Design and found I had a new passion: Diversity and inclusion topics for persons with disabilities.

I am currently head of the Diversity and Inclusion Office at Tec de Monterrey, and also the founder of the organization "Mexican Women with Disabilities" where we focus on raising awareness around gender and disability issues.

My path to reach this point has had its ups and downs. First of all, I never imagined I would work in something like this. After completing my MBA at EGADE Business School my vision has extended to unknown horizons. I decided to study an MBA at EGADE because I understood the impact business has on the world. Now, as a specialist and professional in diversity, inclusion and human rights issues related to the community of persons with disabilities, I can create new opportunities.

I have been a speaker for 14 years and so far have two TEDX conferences. I believe that telling our stories changes the world and each person chooses their own path and story.  

Having been in a wheelchair for more than half my life and done so many things so far, from serving as a representative and running an NGO, to working in the international company Mars in Culture and Inclusion and founding “Mexican Women with Disabilities,” my mission is to assure that what we do truly helps to reduce inequalities and achieves a far more inclusive world.

I firmly believe that education can transform the world into one that celebrates our differences and genuinely acknowledges the human dignity of each and every person.

Creo que cada quien enfrenta los retos de la vida de manera distinta y algo que yo he aprendido a lo largo de la mía es mi proceso de amor propio, de entender mi historia y el contexto de las desigualdades de los grupos que han sido históricamente discriminados desde mi propia experiencia.

Hola soy Maryangel García-Ramos, fundadora de la organización “Mujeres Mexicanas con Discapacidad” y líder de la oficina de diversidad e inclusión en el Tec de Monterrey.

De niña yo era bailarina, tenía una inmensa pasión por las artes y estaba siempre activa. Un día a los 13 años me dolió la espalda repentinamente y resultó que dejé de caminar de un día para otro. Después de exámenes médicos detectaron una malformación arteriosa alrededor de la médula espinal, una lesión que le pasa solo al 0.01% de la población de hombres de 35 años para arriba. Desde entonces vivo con una discapacidad motriz, utilizo una silla de ruedas desde hace 21 años. 

Desde muy joven encontré una pasión en todo lo que tuviera que ver con diseño y el arte, estudié Diseño de modas y también descubrí una nueva pasión: Temas de diversidad e inclusión para las personas con discapacidad. 

Actualmente soy líder de la oficina de diversidad e inclusión dentro del Tec de Monterrey, y también soy fundadora de la organización “Mujeres Mexicanas con Discapacidad” en donde nos dedicamos a dar visibilidad a los temas que tienen que ver con género y discapacidad.

Mi trayectoria para llegar aquí ha tenido varios altos y bajos, en primer lugar porque no me imaginé trabajar en algo así, desde que hice mi MBA en el EGADE Business School mi visión se ha ampliado a horizontes nuevos por conocer. Decidí hacer una Maestría en Administración y Dirección de Empresas en el EGADE porque me di cuenta del impacto que tienen los negocios en el mundo. Ahora, como especialista y profesional en temas de diversidad, inclusión y derechos humanos por la comunidad con discapacidad puedo crear nuevas oportunidades.

Llevo 14 años siendo conferencista y al día de hoy tengo 2 conferencias TEDX. Creo que contar nuestras historias cambia el mundo y cada persona decide su camino y su historia. 

Al estar más de la mitad de mi vida en una silla de ruedas y haber realizado tantas cosas como lo he hecho hasta ahora, desde trabajar como diputada y dirigir una ONG, hasta trabajar en una empresa internacional como Mars en Cultura e Inclusión y fundar “Mujeres Mexicanas con Discapacidad”, he decidido tener una misión para asegurar que lo que hacemos realmente ayude a la reducción de desigualdades y a un mundo mucho más inclusivo.

Creo firmemente que la educación puede transformar el mundo, que celebre más nuestras diferencias y que verdaderamente reconozca la dignidad humana de todas las personas.
