Overview

Dr. Stuart Candy is a futurist, artist, facilitator, and educator, dedicated to fostering collective capacity to think ahead via inclusive, interactive, and radically imaginative engagement with alternative futures.

Best known for bringing foresight/futures into fuller dialogue with media, games, and design, his contributions include the first Ph.D. dissertation on the intersections of the design and foresight fields, “The Futures of Everyday Life”, card game “The Thing from the Future”, edited collection “Design and Futures”, and open access toolkit “The Futures Bazaar”, which has been used around the world, including for a participatory futures event staged last year across six Tec campuses.

Stuart Candy’s extensive consulting, speaking and advisory experience spans multilateral institutions, governments, Fortune 500 companies, and organizations such as the Smithsonian Institution, Dubai Museum of the Future, Oxford University, International Red Cross, the BBC, The New York Times, Danish Design Center, Arup, TED, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

He is the first Fellow of The Long Now Foundation, Chair of the Center for PostNatural History, and director of Situation Lab. He has held fellowships with the Museum of Tomorrow (Brazil), INK (India), the Berggruen Institute, and the World Economic Forum, as well as academic appointments at leading design schools, most recently the inaugural professorship in Social Foresight at Parsons School of Design, New York.

Stuart Candy joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished Visiting Professor in Critical Futures for the School of Architecture, Art and Design.

Overview

Dr. Ernesto Stein was the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) representative in Mexico, where he guided all the activities of the IDB Group (public and private side) in the country with a focus on reducing regional gaps and fostering economic development. With a career spanning almost 30 years at the IDB, Ernesto Stein has served different roles, including principal economist at the Research Department and regional economic advisor for Central America, Mexico, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

He has also been a Growth Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for International Development.

His research primarily focuses on areas critical to economic development and policy. These include international trade and integration, foreign direct investment, productive development policies, institutional economics, and political economy.

He has authored or edited over 12 books and contributed to more than 40 articles in edited volumes and refereed journals such as the Journal of International Economics, the Journal of Development Economics, Economic Policy, Economics and Politics, and the American Economic Review (papers and proceedings), among others.

Ernesto Stein joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished University Professor in Public Policy for the School of Social Sciences and Government and the School of Government and Public Transformation.

Overview

Dr. Armendariz is recognized globally as one of the leading figures in the field of hepatology and as a pioneer in gene therapy. In addition to his contributions to Tecnológico de Monterrey, Dr. Armendariz has collaborated for more than 25 years at the University of Guadalajara, where he became Full Professor "C", founder of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genomics, as well as founder and director of the Institute of Molecular Biology in Medicine at said university, one of the first programs in Mexico in what is now called Genomic Medicine. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Florence, in Italy. 

A Level III Emeritus Researcher of the Mexican National System of Researchers, much of Dr. Armendariz's research has focused on the cellular and molecular basis of the treatment of liver cirrhosis and renal glomerulosclerosis. As a result of his research, he has published more than 200 scientific articles, has presented more than 470 papers in national and international congresses, and has played leadership roles in the National Commission for the Human Genome, the Mexican Academy of Science, and the National Academy of Medicine (Mexico). Among the most relevant recognitions of his career is the National Science Award "Mario Molina", obtained in 2023. 

Dr. Armendariz continues his career at Tecnológico de Monterrey, now as Distinguished Professor in Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Overview

Dr. Alejandro Madrigal began his medical studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and continued his training at the world’s top universities such as University College London (UCL), Stanford, and Harvard. He is currently a Professor of Hematology at UCL and a Professor Emeritus of the National System of Researchers in Mexico. He was an Honorary Affiliated Physician at the Royal Free Hospital (UK) and UCL Cancer Institute. 

He was the founder and first scientific director of the Anthony Nolan Research Institute in London, a leading organization that helps people with blood cancer and/or blood disorders. Through this institution, he has trained hundreds of doctors and scientists and has helped develop multiple cord blood collection centers across the UK.  Hi research primarily revolves around immunotherapy and stem cell transplantation, particularly from unrelated donors. His pioneering work has sought to make this process less complex and more accessible to more people, especially minorities. 

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a member of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK. He is also an honorary member of the National Academy of Medicine (Mexico) and the Mexican Academy of Sciences, among many others. In addition, he was president of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) (2010-2014).

He has received 4 honorary doctorates and was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

Overview

Under the premise that “animation is the greatest form of visual storytelling”, Travis Blaise co-founded the SketchToAnimate initiative, where he is also director and instructor. Through that platform, he has created workshops, tutorials, online classes, and demos covering a wide range of topics like character design, animation, storyboarding, and building an animation portfolio.

In 2008, he was an adjunct professor of an experimental 2D animation class at Cal Arts (California, U.S.). Then from 2017-2021, he was a mentor, instructor, and adjunct professor at Digipen Studios, training students in animation and storyboarding.

With over 30 years of experience, Travis Blaise has participated in a wide range of movies and TV shows throughout his career in storyboard artistry such as Disenchantment (2021), Big Mouth (2017), Disney's Penn Zero (2014), and his animation work with Brother Bear (2003), Lilo and Stitch (2002), Mulan (1998), and The Lion King (1994).

He worked for Disney from 1990 to 2004, where he worked as an in-between artist and animator in films and video games. After his time at Disney, he worked for Project Firefly Animation Studios, Cartoon Network, Digital Domain, DisneyToon Studios, The Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Netflix, and Warner Bros. Animation.

He has been a global lecturer and speaker about the production of digital art, animation, and storytelling projects in Cal Arts, Digipen, Toon Boom, Wacom, Disney, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Annecy Festival, and the Bangkok Comic Con, to name a few.
