Social Innovation Center

Through a multidisciplinary team, our purpose is to develop training and research strategies to address some of the main social needs of the country and the world, generating and validating innovative solutions.

The Social Innovation Center develops social impact projects that favor the communities and cooperatives with which we collaborate in organizational, economic, social, community and sustainability aspects, among others.

In this Center, you can develop, innovate, create and, mostly, combine efforts in willingness to contribute and generate empathy, learning and actions that allow you improve life quality of people in communities with whom we collaborate.

The Social Innovation Center has the purpose of linking national and foreign students and universities willing to work together on social innovation projects. It is concretized as a world-class center, with an interdisciplinary team that will contribute to the generation of an ecosystem of social innovation, for research, generation and validation of innovative solutions to this problem.

Winter i

The course will take place in the city of San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas. A multicultural city where the worldview of indigenous peoples descended from the Maya coexists with the international vision of visitors and residents from around the world.

Program features

  • Location: CIS, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México.
  • Level of instruction: Undergraduate.
  • Program´s length: 5 weeks.
  • Date(s): January 4th to ebruary 3rd 2023.
  • Maximum number of participants: 25 per group.

Student goals

  • Strengthen and apply the curricular and co-curricular competencies defined in the Tec21 educational model.
  • Use the knowledge gained in the classroom in a specific cultural and community context.
  • Develop a vision of the diverse socio-economic conditions in Mexico.
  • Develop awareness about the care and use of natural resources.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of the capacities of communities in relation to the challenges.

Communities

Through academic challenges we address the needs of communities and organizations of different municipalities in the region called "Los Altos de Chiapas", mostly belonging to the Tzotzil ethnic group who subsist through different social, productive and commercial projects.

Awakening

We, at Center for Social Innovation, provide an experiential learning experience with a holistic and inclusive approach, addressing the different dimensions of the human being, henceforth the participants strengthen their authentic self thus developing their capabilities as change agents. Awakening Week consists of five immersive days of educational and recreational activities through personal accompaniment and strengthening for young people motivated to grow to serve, forming in our highschool students' social responsibility as an axis of life.

Program features

  • Location: CIS, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México and Chiapas Campus, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
  • Level of instruction: Highschool.
  • Student's profile: Regular academic status, be in your second or third year of high school, an average equal to or greater than 80, not having disciplinary or academic integrity committees and not having lost rights to participate in any Tecnológico de Monterrey program.
  • Program´s length: 5 weeks.
  • Date(s): October 30th to november 5th, 2022.
  • Maximum number of participants: 20 per group.

Overview

Professor Ana Elena Mallet is an independent curator specializing in modern and contemporary design, and cultural management. She has taught History of Design, Art as well as Contemporary Photography in various institutions and universities throughout Mexico and has overseen the creation and planning of academic programs in different institutions. Since 2018, she is a guest curator at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, in charge of putting together the first-ever public Mexican Design collection in the country.

She has held curatorial positions at Museo Soumaya, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil and was Programming deputy Director at Museo Tamayo. She has curated exhibitions in Mexico, Europe and the US in museums such as Museo Franz Mayer (Mexico City), MARCO (Monterrey), Musée National des Artes Modéstes in Sète, France; the Art Institute of Chicago; Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA), Craft Contemporary (LA), among many others. She was a member of the London Design Biennale for the 2016 and 2018 editions.

Her research varies from the famous Mexican intricate woven looms to the core of Mexican design itself.

Professor Ana Mallet is Distinguished Professor in Design for the School of Architecture, Art and Design.

La convocatoria “Guardianes de la Memoria” tiene como objetivo recolectar y documentar la memoria colectiva del TEC en su 80 aniversario.

For the last past 80 years, the history of TEC has been shaped by the history of its people. Every student, collaborator, professor, parent, and member of the wider community has left their mark.

The aim of this call is to summon the “Guardians of Memories”, since we are aware that their history is our history.

This is why, in order to celebrate these first eight decades, we want to bring to light and relate all those achievements, milestones, fun facts, and moments, thereby remembering and honoring our past, acting in the present and, together, building the future society needs.

If you or someone you know has any photos, videos or items that have a great anecdote behind them, then this call is for you.

Overview

Dr. Frank Loge is currently Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director of the Center for Water Energy Efficiency, and member of the Secure Research Commuting Environment in the University of California Davis (UC Davis). In addition, he is member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Water Efficiency in Chicago and former member of the Governor Newsom’s Water Resilience Initiative Portfolio, from the Governor’s Office in Sacramento, California.

His research involves green engineering and environmental sustainability with a focus on water, waste, energy, and built environment systems; risk analysis of engineered and natural systems focusing on water and health relationships; water and energy conservation, and resource use efficiency.

Dr. Loge is working on biomarkers of exposure to hazardous substances for the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Superfund Research Center (US). In addition, he has worked on projects such as a multi-community intervention with UV light disinfection for estimating the risk of gastrointestinal illness from drinking groundwater for the US Environmental Protection Agency, and an environmentally benign manufacturing process utilizing renewable biopolymers to manufacture natural fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites for the National Science Foundation (US), among others.

Professor Loge has over 100 publications on subjects related to leak reduction and water management; water distribution system optimization; utility-specific water loss reduction standards, to name a few, on publications such as Environmental Research Letters; Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management; 2021 IEEE Visualization (conference paper), among others. 

Dr. Loge has been awarded the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Award (2015 & 2017); the Ray B. Krone Endowed Professorship of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at University of California Davis (2013 - present); he has also won the People Prosperity and Planet (P3) Award five times from 2007 to 2012 in several categories and has also been recognized by the National Science Foundation with the CAREER Award (2001-2006).

Professor Frank Loge joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished Visiting Professor in Water Science for the School of Engineering and Sciences.

Overview

Dr. Manish Kumar is Professor and Head of the Sustainability Cluster in the School of Engineering at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. He has been part of the Faculty in the Discipline of Earth at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, and he has also worked at the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL), US, as Visiting Faculty under the Water Advanced Research and Innovation (WARI) Fellowship.

His academic and research formation has also taken place in universities around the world such as Tezpur University, in India; Kunsan National University, in South Korea; and Uppsala University, in Sweden, to name a few. He has been featured in the list of the top 2% researchers in the world released by Stanford University since its inception, and he is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). 

Manish Kumar’s research focuses on ascertaining, broadening, comprehending, and developing various dimensions of the fate, transport, and remediation of geogenic, micro, microbial, and emerging contaminants in freshwater systems. He has led and worked on relevant projects for today’s climate and water contexts such as a pilot scale in-situ application for arsenic and fluoride removal from the groundwater for a safe drinking water production perspective alongside the WIN Foundation, in the US; wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 in Ahmedabad for UNICEF Gujarat, in India; and an Asia Pacific Network supported multinational project on the development of new water supply strategies in two major cities of India and Sri Lanka in the context of climate change, rapid urbanization, and population growth. He was on the expert panel of the UNEP report on 'Environmental Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance'.

Professor Kumar has contributed in over 150 international journal articles and has conceived and directed the delivery of numerous research projects. He as also been Editor for the Total Environment Research Themes, Associate Editor for several publications such as the Reviews on Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, Groundwater for Sustainable Development and Hydrological Research Letter. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Nature Partner Journals (NPJ) Clean Water, ES&T Engineering and Science of the Total Environment, Elsevier, to name a few.

He was recognized for the fifth consecutive year as part of the World's Top 2% Scientists ranking published by Elsevier (2023), based on an algorithm developed by experts at Stanford University, in the United States. He features on the ‘Single year performance in 2022’ and ‘Career’ lists, on subjects such as environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and Earth & environmental sciences. Also, he has received other recognitions like two KPCSD COVID Research Awards of worth 2 Lakhs each; Faculty Research Award by Career 360; Best Research Paper Award & Best Poster Award (2018); Best Research Award (2013) at 4th IWA Asia Pacific Water Young Professional Conference, Global Change Research (GCR) Grant from Asia Pacific Network (2018- 2020), DST young scientist grant (2012-15), among many others.

Overview

Dr. Manish Kumar is Professor and Head of the Sustainability Cluster in the School of Engineering at the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. He has been part of the Faculty in the Discipline of Earth at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, and he has also worked at the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL), US, as Visiting Faculty under the Water Advanced Research and Innovation (WARI) Fellowship.

His academic and research formation has also taken place in universities around the world such as Tezpur University, in India; Kunsan National University, in South Korea; and Uppsala University, in Sweden, to name a few. He has been featured in the list of the top 2% researchers in the world released by Stanford University since its inception, and he is Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). 

Manish Kumar’s research focuses on ascertaining, broadening, comprehending, and developing various dimensions of the fate, transport, and remediation of geogenic, micro, microbial, and emerging contaminants in freshwater systems. He has led and worked on relevant projects for today’s climate and water contexts such as a pilot scale in-situ application for arsenic and fluoride removal from the groundwater for a safe drinking water production perspective alongside the WIN Foundation, in the US; wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 in Ahmedabad for UNICEF Gujarat, in India; and an Asia Pacific Network supported multinational project on the development of new water supply strategies in two major cities of India and Sri Lanka in the context of climate change, rapid urbanization, and population growth. He was on the expert panel of the UNEP report on 'Environmental Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance'.

Professor Kumar has contributed in over 150 international journal articles and has conceived and directed the delivery of numerous research projects. He as also been Editor for the Total Environment Research Themes, Associate Editor for several publications such as the Reviews on Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, Groundwater for Sustainable Development and Hydrological Research Letter. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Nature Partner Journals (NPJ) Clean Water, ES&T Engineering and Science of the Total Environment, Elsevier, to name a few.

He was recognized for the fifth consecutive year as part of the World's Top 2% Scientists ranking published by Elsevier (2023), based on an algorithm developed by experts at Stanford University, in the United States. He features on the ‘Single year performance in 2022’ and ‘Career’ lists, on subjects such as environmental sciences, environmental engineering, and Earth & environmental sciences. Also, he has received other recognitions like two KPCSD COVID Research Awards of worth 2 Lakhs each; Faculty Research Award by Career 360; Best Research Paper Award & Best Poster Award (2018); Best Research Award (2013) at 4th IWA Asia Pacific Water Young Professional Conference, Global Change Research (GCR) Grant from Asia Pacific Network (2018- 2020), DST young scientist grant (2012-15), among many others. 

Manish Kumar joined Tecnológico de Monterrey as Distinguished Professor in Water Science for the School of Engineering and Sciences.
